Weekly - Thursday morning, Javea Old Town, car park opposite Local Police Station, (When a bank holiday falls on a Thursday, there is often a limited version of the market the day before.(PLEASE NOTE: During extensive roadworks and the building of an underground carpark on the market site -the Thursday Market will, until further notice, be held on the newly created carpark on the mainroad into Javea before Mercadona and Lidl.) Opening hours shops and offices varies depending on the time of the year but are roughly:
Shopping Hours: Most other shops close during "siesta time" which can vary depending on the time of the year but is roughly 1 to 2 p.m. until 4.30 or 5 p.m. It is best to check individual shops on this. Some shops do not open on a Saturday afternoon Many non-food shops do not open until 9.30 or 10 a.m. On national and local bank holidays, it is best to check beforehand; some supermarkets open during the morning, especially if the bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Monday. Banks and Offices: Banks: are normally open from 8.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and Saturday morning until 12.30. Cajas: (similar to a building society) follow similar open hours to banks except for Saturday mornings when they never open. Some re-open one day a week, in the evening, for a couple of hours (except during the summer months). Javea Post office: Only 1, in the old town. Javea Town Hall & other Public Offices Situated in the old town. Gestors / Notaries / Solicitors: Check with individual offices. Some open morning and evening like shops, others in the morning only. N.B. During local fiestas, be prepared for changes to all the above times. Schools in Javea: The school system is now very similar to U.K. with infant, junior and senior schools followed by university. Some schools are able to offer pre-school facilities from the age of three. Compulsory education is up to the age of 16. There are several state schools at infant, junior and senior level, as well as many nurseries (when enquiring, bear in mind the language being taught in any particular school). To enrol it is necessary to prove that you are actually living in the area and catchment area rules apply. There are also several private international schools in the area. Religion: The region is predominantly Catholic but many other religions are catered for as a result of the influx of outsiders. Medical facilities There are numerous private clinics and practices in the area, along with several dental centres. For those not eligible for NHS health care, there are a number of private health insurance schemes. Spanish health insurance schemes are competitively priced and many include GP cover. All chemists display an out of hours duty rota.
